Scott Deyo

University Ombuds

Mr. Scott Deyo is UNC Charlotte’s inaugural University Ombuds, serving as a confidential resource to help faculty, staff, and graduate students informally work through challenging workplace problems, dilemmas, and conflicts. In this role, Scott uses a variety of interest-based techniques to help individuals find productive, collaborative solutions to their own problems, provides feedback on emerging or systemic concerns, and provides recommendations for positive change to University policies and practices. Throughout his 25 years of experience as a conflict resolution professional, Scott has served as the Ombuds director in four organizations and the director of equal opportunity and diversity for the Department of Defense headquarters. He has mediated over 250 discrimination cases, and as an Ombuds helped over 4,000 people explore resolution options for 17,000 complex workplace issues. These issues included policies, processes, and systemic issues that broadly related to culture, trust, values, fairness, equity, and change. As a leader in the ombuds field, Scott coordinated opportunities for collaboration and training for Ombuds across the federal government, and provided strategic advice to senior executives that led to the creation of seven new programs.

Scott earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from James Madison University and a Master of Science from George Mason University’s Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution. He chairs the International Ombuds Association Certification Board’s Professional Practices Committee, which helps to uphold the highest levels of professional standards of certified ombuds.
